Course description
A focused analysis of historical and modern Japanese society through works of art and media including photography, film, maps, and other visual documents. Students learn to extract information from images as part of a visual analysis. They will also deal with social geographical methods for understanding population density, urban flows, economic disparities, transportation, and built environments. Students will analyze and compare what they understand about Japanese culture with other, more familiar environments. Taught in English.
Japanese culture is visually appealing. There is an emphasis on showing the outer shell when it comes to many aspects of life. I looked at maps, travel brochures, advertisement, videos, and pictures to understand the importance of visually appealing. Surprising travel brochures held a great importance on how modern society evolved. During the early eras few people could travel beyond the prefecture so the can never see what is beyond their backdoor allowing the shogunate to hold more power. Little by little people where traveling around the country and documenting each location that they went to. Many of these travelers published brochures to allow other to see what is in their own country. With these first travel brochures began the large migration of Japan.
