JAPN 401: Structure of Japanese Language
This course aims to develop basic understanding of structural features of Japanese language. Students will be introduced to basic phonological, morphological, syntactic, and discourse analysis of Japanese. Taught in Japanese. (Credit/No Credit Available) (Prereq: JAPN 202 or JAPN 300)
. At times when speaking Japanese I placed the accent on the wrong vowel, producing a completely different word. The main reason behind this is that the Japanese language counts by moras and not by syllables. Before taking this class I believed my pronunciation was passable but I found that I was wrong. Ever since the beginning I have mispronunciations different words. Personally it very difficult for me the move the muscles surrounding my lips and the muscles that align the tongue. Knowing that I face these problems I keeps on persisting to become better at his language.
This was a great course to take because I was able to refresh on grammar I studied in the lower division courses. Japanese, like Spanish, has a variety of grammar structures that take time to memorize. Just like any other language if you do not speak it for a certain amount of time, one will forget how to speak the language. I was also able to speak Japanese in the class, more than others, which is a fantastic thing. Explaining grammar points in English in easy but actually explaining them in Japanese is such a challenge.
