MLO 3: Secondary Culture
1. Students describe concepts of culture and use that understanding in their comparison of the target culture with the second culture.
Course taken to fulfill this requirement:
Span 309: History and Politics of Latin America.
1.1 A big reason why I majored in a language is that enjoy studying different cultures around the world. Secondary culture requirement is fulfilled by taking a culture class that is not in our major. As a Japanese major I took course that is based on Spanish culture. I enjoyed fulfilling this MLO because it gave me an opportunity to study and gain a better understanding of my own culture. Taking a class that is outside of our major allows to have a better understanding of the world around us, Japanese and Spanish culture are different in many aspects but are no coming together is this global society. Brazil has the second largest Japanese population outside of Japan resulting in a influx of immigrants from Brazil traveling back to Japan.
1.2
In this course we were able to learn about countries from Latin America and the influence that North America has on the region. Every week was full of fresh and new ideas because we were continuously jumping from one country to another. A lecture that stuck out to me was on the case of disappearances throughout Latin America but primarily Argentina where over 13,000 citizens were taken away and hidden by the government. Each culture manages their behaviors and manners which can be seen through the history of each of Latin nations. Cuba was one the main focuses of this course due do the involvement in the Cold war and the subsequent embargo.
